House Joint Resolution 63 marks the first step towards abolishing slavery during the 88th Texas Legislature. It is the same language filed during the 87th Legislative Session as HJR 51 .

A JOINT RESOLUTION


          
proposing a constitutional amendment prohibiting slavery and
              
involuntary servitude.
              
       BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
              
       SECTION 1.  Article I, Texas Constitution, is amended by
              
adding Section 35 to read as follows:
              
       Sec. 35.  No person shall be held in slavery or involuntary
              
servitude in this state for any reason, including as a punishment
              
for a crime.
              
       SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
              
submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 2, 2021.
              
The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the
              
proposition: "The constitutional amendment prohibiting slavery
              
and involuntary servitude."
